Recently read The Last Mrs Astor by Frances Kiernan. And, of course, court proceedings over the treatment of Mrs Astor in her last years continue (Kissinger, Barbara Walters et al.).  Interesting to learn that in relation to the really big trusts, the Vincent Astor Foundation did not give such massive amounts of cash. VAF specialised in seed funding, but the value of grants could be augmented by the connection with and often the very presence of Mrs Astor. Also bought Get Lonely by The Mountain Goats – the opposite album in lots of ways but just as suitable for this wintery weather. Connecting thread: I saw The Mountain Goats play an amazing show at the King’s Arms, also.

I’ve just been listening to the story of the Astors and the family feud that helped construct the original Waldorf-Astoria hotel(s), & am downloading Dorothy Parker-related ghost stories, Stonewall & The Plaza, for starters.

Just to confirm our intentions, folks. We are booked and will fly out on 30 July NZ time. We’ll be avoiding entirely the Meatpacking District. Whatever is famous and happens there can go on without us.

My book says Surya. Indian restaurant, is “sleek and sexy”. Is it?
