Didn’t find Fabulous nobodies at the library, but instead borrowed Lee Tulloch’s Two Shanes. Also set in NYC, it’s the intertwining story of two Australians, both called Shane (or Cheyne) & various New Yorkish characters who, well, intertwine with them in various ways. Americans can’t tell Australians apart so well, and a comedy of errors ensues, but by the end all’s well and everyone’s happily ever after.
Factual thing learned about New York: there is no good surf in Manhattan.

Fabulous nobodies by Lee Tulloch … more new yorkia to inspire, though am not sure we should really let our clothes answer back in an apt that has no proper kitchen. They spend most of their time just hanging there, after all.
